Mrs. Healey

My name is Barbara Healey and I serve as a 7th grade math teacher at Middle School North. This is my second year here. Prior to working here, my family and I spent 10 years in Charlotte, NC where I also taught middle school math. Other places where I have taught include Bristol, VA and Westerville, OH. This is my 23rd year as an educator. I earned my Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Ashland University in 2005.

On a more personal note, my husband and I are the proud parents of five children, most of whom are grown now, and two adorable dogs that we also like to claim as our kids. We have also been blessed with 3 amazing grandsons. Needless to say, all those kids, grandkids and pups keep us very busy.

Why I Teach

At a very young age, I had aspirations of becoming a pharmacist. I held on to this dream until a life-altering event caused me to re-consider my path, and recognize my desire to help and support other adolescents and young teenagers. Coupled with my love of math (due to some pretty awesome math teachers I had along the way), the choice to become a middle school math teacher became an easy one for me. For the past 23 years, I have very much enjoyed building relationships with my students, and sharing my passion for a subject that I love.

Activity Description

This year, we are incorporating games into our math curriculum as a way to strengthen certain skills. Games encourage students to think critically and strategically. Games also help to build camaraderie among peers, promote a sense of teamwork and belonging, and stimulate areas of the brain that control memory. A few of our favorite games include Jenga, Simon, Battleship, Clue and Checkers. There’s a lot to be said for all the old classics that we grew up playing! Who knew they could be fun AND educational?
