Mrs. Crum

FEATURE TEACHER DECEMBER

Mrs. Crum

I am the Reading Specialist at Middle School North and I teach Reading Intervention. This is my fourth year teaching here at North. Before working for Groveport Madison I worked for  Reynoldsburg City Schools from 2001 until 2015 teaching English Language Arts and Social Studies for grades 6 through 8 and Columbus City Schools from 1997 through 2001 teaching middle school English Language Arts and health. I graduated from Otterbein College in June of 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and from Walden University in June of 2006 with a masters degree in Middle Level Education . When I am not at school, I am a busy wife (for the last 20 years) and a boymom to two active boys, Sam (age 10) and Caleb (age 6). Baseball, football and basketball keep our family super busy.

Why I Teach

I have always wanted to help people get where they want to be and I think that’s my biggest “Why” for teaching. I knew in the 4th grade that I wanted to be a teacher and then I was fortunate enough to have great teachers along the way who showed me how to do that. Everyday, I see, in my teaching, a little glimpse of teachers like Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Snider, Mr. Priest, Mrs. Hartman, and many others. I always want to make sure students know that I believe they can be amazing and successful and then I want to help them get there, wherever “there” is.

Trail Mix Mania

Very recently, Mrs. Nirote and I collaborated on an activity that allowed our students the opportunity to do some recipe reading, while understanding things like planning, collaboration and profits. Our Trail Mix Mania activity allowed some students to use measuring cups for the first time, gave them a little taste of workplace collaboration and gave us the opportunity to discuss the difference between cost and selling price and profits. At the end of the activity, students had a bag of trail mix to enjoy together.
